I had the great opportunity to attend Google I/O 2016 and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had in my professional life. I get the feeling that all of us who work in technology have dreamed of the day when we will have the opportunity to meet all those developers who work in large companies such as Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc. and who set the standards in our industry.
For me, that day finally arrived at Google I/O.
But it was not as I had imagined; what I had envisioned was very different to reality. I was expecting to watch elite developers give hard-to-follow talks. I even thought that these “rockstar” developers wouldn’t even look at me.
It was quite the contrary.
Besides what I learned about technology, industry trends and the evolution of Google’s technology, I realized that more than anything, this type of events is an invitation to get involved. It’s your chance to participate and be part of an awesome software development community.
How to Get Involved
Here’s how you can throw in your two cents,
- Contribute to open source projects.
- Participate in community events.
- Attend conferences.
It’s up to us to get involved in it, to contribute to its growth, and provide that one line of code that is needed to change the world.
Blogging is one of the easiest ways to get involved and if you are a developer. Having a blog is almost a must nowadays. There will always be someone who is interested in or needs your point of view, experience, and whatever else you share in your blog.
Just think of how many times you have solved a problem thanks to someone else’s post.
And as Scott Hanselman says, “…your blog is the engine of the community”.
Contribute to Open Source Projects
Writing code is your thing. Why not use this skill to help in an Open Source project?
We can always use more hands to build a better future. You can start with small contributions. You only need a single line of code to start!
Participate In Community Events
Big things are happening in our community, do not miss the opportunity to be part of them. Attend workshops, be a mentor, receive mentoring, learn, code, have fun, and get involved!
Attending conferences is very important because you have the opportunity to listen to the experts, ask questions, and keep abreast of all the latest technological advances.
One of the great advantages of attending conferences like Google I/O, is the opportunity to listen to the people behind the products. It’s fun when you realize that they are normal, living, breathing people just like you and I. They share the same passion for technology and today they are helping shape the future!
We are part of a great community. It’s up to us to get involved in it, to contribute to its growth, and provide that one line of code that is needed to change the world.
